Introduction of UESTC Library

The library of UESTC was founded in 1956, incorporating the documents held by Jiaotong University, Nanjing Institute of Technology and South China Institute of Technology in the area of electronic science. As the result of constant accumulation for 50 years, now it boasts of a unique collection system characterized by documents and resources in electronic and information science and relevant disciplines.

Now it has 16360 square meters of floor space, which provides 1400 seats. The opening hours now have amounted to 98 hours per week. The library holds more than 3,000,000 items, including near 150,000 digital books and periodicals and more than 30 kinds of network academic resources, including more than 130 databases, like CNKI,SSLIBRARY, VIP information, EI, IEL, SPIE, EBSCO, Kluwer, INSPEC, SpringerLink, PQDD-B, etc., are on the list. In the meanwhile, lots of special self-built databases have been established, including Doctor's & Postgraduate's Theses and Dissertations, Navigation of Net Resources of Key Disciplines, E-reserve Collection Database, University Publications, Network Periodical Navigation System. All these are available for teachers and students on campus all day long. The Library also provides access to various online databases such as DIALOG and BDS to provide documents and information for teaching and research.

The library of UESTC is one of the 22 founder-members of China Academic Digital Library Alliance, which leads the construction of China's academic digital library. Based on Cernet, the library has build up switched fast Ethernet LAN with bandwidth of 1Gb fiber backbone and 100 Mb UTP to desktop. It also offers the ADSL connection mode. The 2G fiber SAN network storing frame ensures the resource's increase at the speed of TB. The perfect information security system guarantees network information service for all day along. The library website integrates various digital resources and services. The E-mail and FTP systems have been built. MELINETS, the library integrated management system, based on a Compaq AlphaServer minicomputer and SYBASE database, enables the professional work automation in an all-round way.

l Navigation by subjects: taking part in the construction of CALIS's project of navigation by subjects, undertaking the secondary subject of physical electronics and electromagnetic wave and microwave technology.

l Interlibrary loan and document delivery: taking part in the interlibrary loan and document delivery organized by CALIS, and establishing cooperation with National Library of China, CASHL, NSTL, OCLC in the field of interlibrary loan and document delivery.

l Union Digital Resource Search Platform: realizing the integration of different resources and union searching.

l E-reserve collection database: carrying out the project of the digitalization of teaching material collection and taking part in the project of University Teaching Reference Information Management and Service System of CALIS.

l Novelty search: The Novelty Search Center of the library of UESTC is authorized by the Ministry of Education P.R.C. and Sichuan Sci-tech Committee, having the qualification to accept the provincial and ministry project for novelty-search. The amount of novelty search has reached over 100 per year. And the amount of searching for theses covered and cited has reached 600 per year.

And in the time for preparation for postgraduate entrance examination, the opening time for free reading room is from 7:00 to 23:00.

The new library is located at the center of Qingshui River Campus. The building embodies the style of elegance. The new library will have 50600 square meters of floor space and is scheduled to be put into operation in the year of 2008. The new library will be a modern university library with advanced management and characterized by electronic and information science. It will be a collection center and academic and cultural exchange center.
